West African & Caribbean Drumming Residency
Sekou Sylla of Guinea, West Africa, teaches students to play percussion music from Guinea and Senegal, and some rhythms from the Caribbean. They will learn basic poly-rhythmic drumming styles and techniques for playing the main African percussion instruments: the djembe, djun djun, songban, kenkeni, log drum and African-inspired drums from the Caribbean and Brazil. They will also learn the cultural background and traditions associated with the instruments and the role of each drum within associated musical tradition. Students will develop their listening skills and coordination, work together as a group, and gain the confidence that comes with working toward a performance.
Remote Learning Adaptation: In lieu of hand drums, students can use a pot, pan, box, (including oatmeal box), large can, bucket, plastic bottle, desk or table top, spoon, stick, or of course, any type of percussion instrument on hand.

Live Online:

School sets up link for remote meeting and makes the artist a co-host. Screen share must be enabled. Artist may need to sign on 20-30 minutes prior to the meeting to check sound levels. A representative from the school must be on the call and mute students as needed. Please introduce the performer as an Arts for Learning Massachusetts artist.
